March, 2016, is "Save Your Vision Month."
A Child’s Eyes and Forsight Vision are hosting an on-line patching party to help spread awareness about Amblyopia. #IPatch
Amblyopia is the most common cause of vision impairment in children, effecting 2-3 out of every 100 children. If left untreated, Amblyopia can lead to permanent blindness. However, Amblyopia is a very treatable form of blindness. Patching or, more formally, Occlusion Therapy is widely accepted as the best treatment for Amblyopia, but only about seventy-five percent of children and their parents who attempt patching are able to succeed with treatment. Failure is often due to a lack of knowledge and support.
Meet Lucy: Lucy (York, PA) is joyful 5 year-old and has been patching to treat her amblyopia for 2 years. Lucy patches her eye 1-2 hours per day. Patching can be difficult for both the child and the parent. Lucy's parents biggest concern is that Lucy doesn't feel embarrassed about wearing her eye patch in public. We want to spread awareness about Amblyopia to help prevent blindness and we want to highlight our little patching super heroes, like Lucy, who wear eye patches every day to help save their vision!
A Child’s Eyes and ForSight Vision have teamed up to provide a monthly support group for families dealing with Amblyopia called SUCCESS. They meet the first Monday of every month from 6:30PM-7:30PM. Children come to the group wearing their eye patches and participate in fun and challenging activities that help them improve their vision. Parents meet and encourage one another and learn new strategies and treatments. The group is led by Danielle Crull, ABOM a Master Certified Optician, and Leora Weist, Vision Screening Analyst.
During the month of March we are asking families to post pictures of their little super patchers on social media, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #IPatch.
