What is Low Vision?
Low vision is a term used to describe partial sight or sight that isn't fully
correctable with surgery, pharmaceuticals, contact lenses or glasses. Vision
may be hazy, blurred, distorted or partially obscured in the central vision field.
How do I know if I have low vision?
If you have difficulty recognizing a familiar face or if you have difficulty
reading, you may have low vision. If you have difficulty seeing objects and obstacles
such as steps, curbs, walls and furniture, you may have low vision. If you have
difficulty watching TV, cooking, writing or grooming, you may have low vision.
If you no longer can see to do tasks of everyday living, you may have low vision.

- Absorptive Lenses
These glasses easily fit over a pair of glasses and are ultraviolet (UV) blocking.
The tints available are helpful for a variety of eye conditions.
- Non-optical Adaptive Devices
The items include large print check registers, address books and calendars.
There are large remote control units, telephones and clocks. Personal grooming
aids, adaptive kitchen items, and games are also available.
- Closed Circuit Television Systems
These electronic magnification devices allow a person to read, write or do personal
grooming tasks. Typically they are designed so that a television camera projects
a magnified image onto a TV screen or pair of glasses. The level of magnification
is much greater than that of conventional hand-held magnifiers. We can evaluate
and train you to use the system that best meets your needs.
What can I do?
First, you should consult with your primary eye care professional, either an
ophthalmologist or optometrist and ask if they think you would benefit from an
examination at the ForSight Vision Center. Here, a specially trained low vision
optometrist will examine you. The specialist may recommend various low vision
aids or appliances. You may also stop by the ForSight Vision Store and try out
these items.
Is there a cost for the low vision examination?
Yes, there is a fee. The exam cost is covered by Medicare and most private insurance
plans.
