Volunteer Opportunity for Project to Bring Live Theatre to People Who are Blind
or Visually Impaired.
From Bill Rhinesmith, President:
"For the past couple of months I, and others, have been working on a project
to improve cultural access for persons who are blind, vision impaired, deaf and
hard of hearing. It’s a demonstration project in York and Lancaster Counties.
One of the activities is to have live theatre made accessible to persons who are
blind or vision impaired by incorporating an Audio Describer. For a performance,
a trained audio describer communicates the set design, costumes, facial expressions,
body language, and movement of the actors during pauses in the dialogue. Small,
closed circuit receivers are used to broadcast this live from the sound booth
to an earpiece worn by visually impaired guests; other patrons do not hear this
information. Audio Describers sometimes receive compensation for their work.
We are looking for individuals who would be interested in receiving training to
become an Audio Describer. The training will be held sometime in September and
most likely involve two full days of training (Friday and Saturday) and possibly
a half day wrap up (Sunday). The coordinators of the project are not sure yet
if the volunteers will have to pay for their training but assure me that if they
do, it’s a nominal amount. So if you or someone you know might be interested
in becoming involved, please have them contact me at 717-848-1690."
